“To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best day and night to make you everybody else, means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight, and never stop fighting”
~E.E. Cummings

Instant Gratification

I envy my parent’s generation it seems as if they don’t have the same incessant thirst for instant gratification that seemingly, in regards to what I want, can never be quenched. I am a twenty five year old woman pursuing a career that requires great patient and time. I unfortunately can not escape the feeling that time is something I do not have to spare. I want what I want now. I’ve entered into a place I know so well, inertia. Waisting time on what? What is this obsession with instant gratification? The inability to let things build and grow organically. Is it a discipline that has not been instilled because I am a child of the technological age?
Nick Miller: Travel
Travel is little beds and cramped bathrooms. It’s old television sets and slow Internet connections. Travel is extraordinary conversations with ordinary people. It’s waiters, gas station attendants, and housekeepers magically becoming the most interesting people in the world. It’s churches that…
Teach a lady to recommend books and she will recommend books for a lifetime
There are certain books I recommend in a tic-like fashion, compulsively, with no regard for the social consequences of such behavior. If you have spent any time with me, either online or in person, it is unlikely that I have not already interrogated you about whether you have read Stoner, Clown Girl, Born To Run, The Gone-Away World, When You Reach Me, The Hottest Dishes of the Tartar Cuisine, Infinite Jest, Big Rabbit’s Bad Mood, and so on. (In the coming months, friends and family can look forward to tuning out and having a moment of personal time when I recommend By Blood, Gone Girl, Losers in Space, The Legend of Pradeep Matthew, and Wonder.)
However, like most booksellers I also have a list of books that I don’t recommend very often, mostly because people rarely ask for recommendations that can be answered by their existence. These are books that I always keep on the shelf at the store, even if they don’t sell for months and months. (Can’t wait for my boss to read this. Hi C!) I rarely sell more than a couple copies a year, but each feels like a personal triumph.
Anyway, Kathy at Between the Margins gave me a very cool opportunity to talk about some of those books for her column The Page Turner, which I have done at the link above. Or you can click it here. (You can also check out the whole series here, which I recommend.) I think you would love any of them. Yes, YOU.
